Incidentally, it totally pays to be friends with a librarian; I posted yesterday about that short story in Ranger Rick that I vaguely recalled, and today second_batgirl hacked into a government database or something and with nothing but my incoherent description to go on, found it! It was "Trash Trek" from the September 1990, volume 24, issue 9, page 18-26. DUDE.
